Why Choose a Board Certified Attorney?

Board Certified Attorneys have earned the right to hold themselves out to the public as specialists in a certain area of the Law. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization (“TBLS”) has granted this right to about 7,000 of the 70,000 or more lawyers licensed to practice in the State of Texas. No other Texas lawyers may hold themselves out as “specialists” in any field.

Board Certification is voluntary and may take place only after an attorney has at least five years of practice, with a minimum of three years in the specialty area. The experience in the specialty area must meet criteria established by the TBLS. Verification of the experience and recommendations must be submitted to the TBLS before the applicant for certification may sit for the written exam. Board certification requires ongoing involvement in the specialty are and periodic substantiation with peer references.

As the TBLS said, “Board certification means an attorney has substantial relevant experience is a select field of law as well as demonstrated, and tested, special competence in that area of law.”

  • Tyler handled my divorce case three years ago, and I could not be happier with the outcome. At the start, my situation looked very bleak: I was served with my wife's divorce lawsuit on the day she left the state with my child, and she had hired an attorney who was probably the most expensive in the state. I quickly needed an experienced attorney and hired Tyler.
