3 tips for surviving the emotional turmoil of divorce

While divorce may be a legal process, it is often highly emotional. Leaving your spouse, dividing your assets and determining custody can be stressful and frustrating. Coping with the end of your marriage may be one of the hardest things you do in your life.

Losing your marriage can feel like you are experiencing a sort of death. While you may go through a painful grieving process, surviving the emotional storm is possible.

1. Get a support network

One of the best ways to make it through your divorce is by leaning on supportive people. Do not make the mistake of isolating yourself. First, look to your existing friends and cultivate new friendships. Talk to your closest family members who give you sound advice. Get an attorney who helps you make well-thought-out decisions. Consider reaching out to a therapist, and do not feel shame about needing professional help.

2. Nurture yourself

Now is the time to explore your interests and passions; you may even need to redefine yourself if your marriage was the most important thing in your life. Consider new activities and hobbies. Read a new book, go hiking, exercise and eat nutritious food. You may experience shock at how some simple activities help you deal with the emotional turmoil of your separation.

3. Let yourself grieve

Grief is a normal reaction to losing your marriage and a spouse. Grieving comes with various emotions, including shock, depression, anger and fear. You may try to suppress or ignore these emotions, but that is counterproductive. You should allow the grieving process to occur. While it may be scary to face the emotional ramifications of your divorce, it is necessary before you can truly heal.

No single act will ease the suffering that comes with divorce, but you can do a few simple things to minimize the pain. Prioritize your emotional health during this difficult time.

I’ve worked with many attorneys throughout the United States on many litigation matters and the biggest deficiencies are lack of industry knowledge and poor communication/follow up.." - D.M.
