Only board-certified attorneys earn the right to be called specialists in a certain practice area. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS) has granted this right to less than 10 percent of the almost 100,000 lawyers licensed to practice in Texas. Even fewer hold dual certification.
Board certification is voluntary and shows that a Texas lawyer "has substantial relevant experience in a select field of law as well as demonstrated, and tested, special competence in that area of law." The TBLS generally requires the following:
At least three years of practice in the specialty area
Verification of this experience and peer recommendations
A difficult written examination
To continue to hold a certification, an attorney periodically needs to demonstrate ongoing involvement in the specialty and offer peer references.
